Circulation and the Use of Pesticides and Control Mechanisms on the Western Border of Paraná

The objective of this research is to investigate the circulation and the use of pesticides and the control mechanisms in the triple border Brazil-Argentina-Paraguay. Particularly interesting, on one hand, are the laws that regulate trade and the use of pesticides in general in Brazil, and the actions of the authorities (taxes, polices, justice, etc.) in the repression and control of contraband and punishment of the violators. On the other hand, the ways in which the media represents this phenomenon are also of interest, as well as the strategies of different agents involved with the problem, from the pesticide industries and businesses, the inspection agencies, the contraband networks, the producers who uses the illicit pesticides, and the consumers potentially affected by the consumption of contaminated products. A review of the legislation documents will be carried out, with data from ADAPAR (Paraná Agricultural Defense Agency), police authorities, pesticide industry and stores, media in general and in the justice departments. This is to understand how the regulation, the controls on the uses and marketing of products, and the inspection and punishment of offender, notably involved in the traffic of pesticides, take place. Interviews and interested conversations will also be conducted with different agents involved with the issue, in order to explore important oral sources for achieving the research objectives.

Social Practices, Representations and Illegalisms at the Brazilian Borders

The economic and political asymmetries that exist on the international borders of Brazil guarantee the flow of people, capital and goods. Individual and collective efforts to make the most of the limits between the legal and the illegal in a frontier environment, promote specific social practices and State actions. In this context, the objective of the research is to analyze the processes of construction of such practices and their representations, investigating the efforts of individuals and social groups to expand their possibilities of existence. To a large extent, the research aims to understand the different networks that act taking advantage of the legal loopholes on the border, describing their practices and representations, exploring their organizations and analyzing the links between the legal and the illegal. For that, the processes of exploitation of the child labor force, the trafficking of drugs, weapons and people, tax evasion, money laundering and all the consequences for sociability and security processes are observed.

Scanning, Construction and Availability of the "Ilha Grande" Newspaper Collection (1980-2018)

The project aims to offer the services of LAFRONT members in scanning and building the collection of the newspaper "Ilha Grande", located at the city of Guaíra / Paraná, in addition to making all material available on the internet in order to universalize access to the collection of one of the oldest newspapers in circulation in the West of the State of Paraná (1980-2018), a period that covers important historical moments such as the flooding promoted by the Itaipu hydroelectric dam, the disappearance of the "Sete Quedas", the regional land transformations, in addition to all the economic changes that mark Brazil's trade relations with Paraguay, for example. To this end, the work uses the personal resources of the laboratory (LAFRONT) and the existing structure in the Documentation and Research Center (NDP), more specifically its scanning machine and its website, which will allocate the digitized material. With this activity, we seek to help to preserve regional memory and facilitate access for researchers and others interested in the material produced by the newspaper in the nearly forty years of its operation.
